At the Meta Connect conference, Meta vigorously promoted its Quest mixed reality platform with the goal of building it into the next big app store. Meta is committed to simplifying the migration process to Meta Horizon OS for mobile developers and has announced a series of new tools and features that will benefit developers. The editor of Downcodes will explain in detail the important information released by Meta at this conference and its impact on future mixed reality application development.
At its Meta Connect conference on Wednesday, Meta pitched its Quest mixed reality platform to developers as the next big app store. Meta says it's working to make it easier for mobile developers to switch to Meta's Horizon OS.
Meta Vice President Mark Rabkin announced that if developers can build apps for Android, they can also build apps for Meta Horizon OS in their favorite languages and IDEs. Meta's open store now supports 3D and spatial applications, and has launched the Meta Spatial SDK to help developers get started.

The SDK allows developers to use their traditional mobile applications and add native spatial features such as floating 3D objects, atmospheres and immersive media. The new Meta Spatial Editor will also make it easier to add panoramas and 3D spatial videos to the media viewer in your system.
For 2D applications, Meta Horizon OS will also provide a variety of features, including resizing, cinema, spatial audio, background running, multitasking, and handling of all manual and controller input.
Meta itself has also been testing its new technology, building new Facebook and Instagram apps for Horizon OS using familiar tools like React Native. Since then, other developers that have tested the system include Amazon (for Prime Video and Amazon Music), Twitch, and others.
Existing mobile apps will also be ported to Horizon OS through the new SDK and other tools, which will help developers "get up to speed," Meta said.
Meta’s move aims to attract more developers to join its ecosystem, enrich Horizon OS application content, and provide users with a richer mixed reality experience. In the future, it will take time to test whether Meta Horizon OS can become the next large-scale application store as hoped. The editor of Downcodes will continue to pay attention to Meta’s trends and bring you more exciting reports.
