This tutorial gives two color mixing methods for the picture above to create a variety of tones.
1. Create a color balance adjustment layer

2. Create a gradient mapping adjustment layer
First press D to set the default color, then create a Gradient Map adjustment layer.
Set the foreground color to white, enlarge the image, and use the eraser tool 
Erase the color of the character.
