A new survey by Elon University in the United States reveals the widespread use of large-language models for artificial intelligence in American adults. The survey shows that more than half of American adults (52%) have used AI large language models such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. This data reflects the popularity of artificial intelligence technology in daily life.
The survey conducted by the "Imagine Digital Future Center" of Elon University in North Carolina in January 2023 selected 500 respondents. The survey results further show that among people who have used AI large language models, 34% said they will use it at least once a day. Among them, ChatGPT became the most popular AI tool with a usage rate of 72%, while Google's Gemini ranked second with a usage rate of 50%.

With the continuous development of AI technology, more and more people are beginning to establish special relationships with AI chatbots. The survey found that 38% of users believe that large language models can establish deep emotional connections with humans, and more than half of respondents have had conversations with chatbots. It is worth noting that about 9% of users mainly use these models for social interaction, such as chatting and seeking company. Users also found that these AI models can show a variety of personality traits such as confidence, curiosity and even humor.
“These discoveries lay the foundation for the common development of humans and AI systems in the coming years,” Lee Renney, director of the Center for Imagination Digital Futures, said in an interview with NBC News. “These tools are being integrated into daily life in an emotionally and influential way, which will obviously be part of a new chapter in human history.”
The survey also found that 51% of respondents used large language models for personal purposes, not work needs. In work scenarios, respondents will use AI in combination with office software such as Slack, PowerPoint and Zoom, which is used to write emails, research ideas, and summarize documents. More than half of respondents believe that the use of AI tools has significantly improved their productivity.
However, despite the many conveniences that AI technology has brought, many respondents are worried about its potential impact. 63% believe that the big language model will significantly reduce human communication, and 59% worry that it will lead to a large amount of unemployment. While AI chatbots bring convenience to people's lives and work, they have also triggered a series of thoughts about their future development.
