According to the latest "ChatGPT 2024 User Growth Report" released by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), OpenAI's flagship product ChatGPT once again showed impressive user growth momentum in the second half of 2024. This growth not only consolidates its leading position in the field of artificial intelligence, but also lays a solid foundation for future technological development.
In just six months, ChatGPT's weekly active users doubled. Looking back in November 2022, when ChatGPT was still in the "Research Preview" stage, it became the fastest app in history to reach 100 million monthly active users at an astonishing speed, in just two months. This achievement made other applications beyond the reach, and they all sighed at how fast it developed.
By November 2023, ChatGPT once again ushered in a milestone, with the number of active users per week exceeding 100 million. The subsequent growth was even more amazing. In December 2024, this number soared to 300 million, and by February 2025, it reached 400 million. The report pointed out that ChatGPT took nine months to grow from 100 million to 200 million weekly active users (November 2023 to August 2024). However, the growth from 200 million to 400 million took less than six months. This growth rate can be called the "turbocharged" level.
a16z report analysis believes that users’ initial interest in ChatGPT is more out of “novelty”. However, over time, what really drives the continued growth of users is its continuously iterative and upgraded functions and models. Especially with the release of GPT-4o, its new multimodal function directly triggered a surge in user usage from April to May 2024. Subsequently, the launch of the advanced voice mode drove a new round of user growth from July to August 2024. The appearance of the o1 model series once again added fire to growth from September to October 2024. This series of "combination punches" has a significant effect, further consolidating ChatGPT's market position.
It is worth mentioning that ChatGPT has always performed very stably on the mobile side. Over the past year, its mobile app users have maintained a monthly growth of 5% to 15%. Currently, of ChatGPT's 400 million active users per week, 175 million are accessed via mobile devices. This shows that users' demand for ChatGPT has penetrated into every aspect of daily life, and they can enjoy the convenience it brings anytime, anywhere.
The report also focused on the influence of competitors such as DeepSeek. The DeepSeek app reached the second place in the world in just 10 days, and won the second place in mobile in February, even seizing 15% of ChatGPT's mobile users. Although DeepSeek has slightly higher user stickiness on mobile than Perplexity and Claude, it still lags behind ChatGPT in overall performance.
According to market intelligence provider Similarweb, ChatGPT still ranks first in terms of monthly independent visits to the network and monthly active users on the mobile side. This shows that despite facing the pursuit of the "new wave", ChatGPT, the "new wave", is still firm and continues to lead the development trend in the field of artificial intelligence.
