In fact, we think about every day when IE6 will really die. However, since its release in 2001, IE6 has dominated the domestic browser market and still accounts for more than 50% of the domestic browser market share.
But I think, whether you are an ordinary user, a website developer, or a domestic browser developer, we should take some measures to jointly promote the demise of IE6.
If you are a loyal user of IE6, please upgrade your IE6 as soon as possible
Give you a reason to upgrade to IE6? All right:
- You and your company are under security threats. There is no better reason to refute this, right? Even internationally renowned large companies such as Google and yahoo have been seriously attacked because of using IE6. Which company's IE6 will not be attacked?
- Governments around the world are suggesting everyone to upgrade their browsers. After the 0day loophole of IE6 was exposed, governments such as Germany, France and Australia called on their citizens to give up using IE6;
- Even Microsoft itself suggests you give up IE6. Microsoft Security Research and Prevention Blog published an article saying that IE6 is most severely affected by the 0day vulnerability, and IE8 is basically not affected by the vulnerability. In fact, Microsoft has called on users to upgrade their browsers more than once.
- This is not the last serious security vulnerability in IE6. I don’t know how many serious security vulnerabilities have occurred since IE6’s release, and this time it is far from the end. It still has at least 144 vulnerabilities!
- Microsoft will no longer support IE6 after 2014. Is 2014 a long time ago? Or do you believe that 2012 is the end of the world?
- IE6 lacks support for web standards. The technology of IE6 is still 10 years ago. Internet technology has undergone tremendous changes after 10 years of development. Website front-end technology is constantly improving. More advanced technologies such as CSS, HTML and Javascript can already bring users a better experience - while IE6 users will not be able to experience these advanced content. For example, some CSS3 features used in front-end observations will not be experienced in IE6 or even IE8.
- Some domestic companies have begun to ask employees to upgrade their browsers. For example, Tencent has asked all employees to upgrade IE6 to IE7.
- IE6 is too outdated, and most foreign netizens no longer use IE6. Statistics show that foreign users have gradually eliminated IE6. IE8 and Firefox are the mainstream (via People's Daily).
- Major foreign websites have begun to clearly state that they will no longer support IE6. For example, Google will stop supporting IE 6 and users must at least upgrade to IE 7.
(Some references are from: http://mashable.com/2010/01/18/5-more-reasons-why-ie6-must-die/)
If these reasons are not enough, please see the reasons why foreign statistics insist on using IE6. Of course, there is some ridiculous meaning here. If you happen to be one of the situations, please don't be angry :):

Of course, in the country, users who insist on using IE6 may have two other reasons:
- I am used to the operation of IE6 and do not like tab-style browsing in IE7 and other browsers. Of course, a person’s habits are the most important. Who invented the browser method of tab is no longer verified, but Opera and Firefox were used one after another, and later the domestic maxthon browser also adopted that method. Then in 2006, the tab method was also adopted. This shows that tab is a good way to browse, efficient and convenient. Otherwise, the majority of netizens would have long begun to oppose this method, and major browsers would not stick to it. So it is recommended that you try new technologies and get out of your habits.
- IE6 is faster, while IE7 and IE8 are too slow. IE7 and IE8 are indeed too slow, but the new versions of Firefox 3.6 and Chrome are always fast.
Front-end developers can strive to give up compatibility with IE6
If you are a glorious front-end developer, I hope you can do as much as possible to make IE6 die faster:
- Lead by example and give up IE6 yourself. Judging from front-end observations and visit statistics of other technical websites, the proportion of IE6 users is more than 30%, which shocked me. As a front-end developer, using IE6 as your main browser, the website you build should not be tested in IE7/8 and other more advanced browsers, right?
- Convince your boss or customer to give up compatibility with IE6. Is it necessary to spend 2 times or even 3 times the time and energy to make the website perform in IE6 and other browsers? I think that for different browsers, appropriate distinction can be taken - allowing websites to achieve the best performance in modern browsers such as Firefox 3.5+, Chrome/Safari and Opera, while implementing relatively poor interfaces in IE - of course without affecting the layout and functionality.
- Call on your friends to abandon IE6. Call on your friends to use IE7/8 or Firefox, Chrome and other browsers. In addition, many people have personal blogs that can call on IE6 users to upgrade their browsers on their blogs. You can also participate in many online projects that promote IE6 upgrades, such as webrebuild.org's IE6 upgrade activities and IE6 Updates that have very good results.
Browser manufacturers should bear more responsibility
A sentence I remembered: There are so many money here, come quickly! This is of course just a joke.
However, it is said that the number of Chinese netizens has reached 360 million now! And this number is still growing. This is obviously a huge market.
So recently, major companies have entered the browser market, each launching their own brand browsers. Sohu browser, Sina browser and 360 browser have appeared in the face of many years of melee Maxthon, Window of the World, Tencent TT, Green Browser and other societies. But all of them are IE as the kernel (maxthon and Sohu browsers have dual-core versions of IE and webkit), and do not have their own kernel. So netizens, don’t think that your computer is safe if you use the so-called safe browser. Its kernel IE itself is not safe. These shell browsers are not safe. But some browsers will add some functions that can prevent you from misoperating.
For the domestic browser market, I think this situation of disputes in the Warring States Period is very good. At least it can popularize some browser knowledge and improve netizens' awareness of the Internet and Internet security.
But I think domestic browser manufacturers should take more responsibilities.
Your browser products do have many features, and also many useful or cool functions. We attach more importance to the usage habits of Chinese people. But when users are attacked due to IE vulnerabilities, will you be responsible? Or put the blame on Microsoft? This seems a bit unfair~
For IE, the safest, most powerful and most stable one should be IE8. If you can promote users to upgrade their kernel to the latest version, it will definitely reduce the risks you have to bear for security. In addition, reducing one kernel support will also reduce your development and maintenance expenditure.
Summarize
It is not a matter of overnight success to let IE6 exit the stage of history. The user's laziness makes him unwilling to take the initiative to upgrade. Microsoft's browser upgrade mode is so old (and Firefox's prompt upgrade and Chrome's background automatic upgrade mode save a lot of trouble). So we can only rely on our own strength to promote the demise of IE6.
