The editor of Downcodes learned that Spotify users can now use Google’s generative AI assistant Gemini extension to conveniently control music playback using natural language. This feature was first discovered in Google application code in June and is now being gradually rolled out to compatible Android devices, bringing users a more intelligent music experience. This move marks an important step for Google Gemini in expanding support for third-party applications, and also provides Spotify users with a new way to interact with music.
Spotify users can now request music playback using natural language through the Gemini extension, Google's generative AI assistant. According to 9to5Google, the feature first appeared in Google app code in June and is now gradually rolling out to compatible Android devices.

Using this extension, users can find and play music by song title, artist, album name, or playlist name, but currently Gemini does not support creating playlists or stations on Spotify. One point to note is that if the user is associated with multiple music services (such as YouTube Music), the user needs to clearly indicate which service they want Gemini to use during the initial request, and then Gemini will default to the last selected service.
Spotify becomes the second non-Google app to receive extended Gemini support, following the launch of WhatsApp support in October.
According to Google's extension support page, users need to link Spotify and Google accounts and enable Gemini Apps Activity to use this feature. This setting will allow AI queries to be saved for up to 72 hours. However, the Spotify extension does not currently work in Google Messages, the Gemini web app, or the Gemini app on iOS, and only works when the Gemini language is set to English.
All in all, Gemini's integration with Spotify brings a more convenient music playback experience to users, but there are still some limitations, such as not supporting the creation of playlists and radio stations, as well as platform and language compatibility issues. In the future, we look forward to Gemini further improving its functions and enhancing user experience.
