A collection of open source fonts that can be used for Chinese font typography .
Someone asked me before whether I could point out some open source fonts in Chinese, so I came up with the idea of Open Source Fonts Collection for Chinese .
I pushed news about Linux on the Telegram channel, and subscribers said it was not surprising, because most of them came from Bilibili Barrage. I was also following me because of Linux. I also wrote an article about Adapta-gtk-theme with exquisite fonts.
It is worth noting that concepts such as "Linux", "Open Source", and "Free Software" have been different in the early days, and are even more confusing to this day. The fonts included and discussed in this project are fonts with open source licensing agreements ; if a font can be obtained for free but closed source, it will no longer be included. This is also due to the unknown authorization situation and limited support for character sets. However, there are many high-quality fonts in this type of font, which can be found by yourself.
This approach is based on practical considerations. The most important reason for paying attention to open source fonts is that China's relevant laws and regulations are not sound, and font manufacturers have a vague definition of font sales, purchases, use, and distribution, and font users at any stage face the risk of legal disputes. In this environment, you may wish to use "harmless" open source fonts .
Chinese characters have a huge number of ideograms, and the design difficulty is beyond the reach of Western languages with only more than a thousand characters, such as numerical symbols. Therefore, even commercial fonts on the market cannot escape the continuous reproduction of the manuscripts decades or even a hundred years ago. But there is nothing wrong with it. First, there are many high-quality predecessor manuscripts, and second, the aesthetic habits passed down from the era of lead movable type are difficult to shake. Moreover, although it is a reproduction, the quality is indeed constantly improving. From this point of view, there is no need to worry about the quality of open source fonts driven by capital and manpower, because they are also based on the "public domain" glyphic originals and follow certain design concepts; and in the actual design process, font printing and fine-tuning of fonts are indispensable, and the text in the special case can be adjusted appropriately.
Linux distributions such as Arch Linux and Ubuntu with extensive community support have included open source fonts in their wikis, but they do not focus on Chinese fonts, and are only included, and do not consider actual use, nor will they be discussed from the perspective of glyph design. The original intention of this project is to make up for this shortcoming.
In addition, some open source projects use commercial fonts for their beauty or do not understand the copyright of the font, which may cause unnecessary trouble. This project also hopes to avoid this problem in a way that provides a wide range of open source font choices.
This collection mainly includes Chinese fonts, but it is undeniable that fonts designed and developed for countries or regions such as Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam that use Chinese characters are of great significance in font printing in the Chinese context , so they are included together. Although this sense of difference can be used to express regional styles in some cases, attention should be paid to the environment when using fonts that meet other regional glyph specifications.
Continue to collect open source Chinese fonts and include them in the open source Chinese font collection (the table below)
Summary of information on some Chinese fonts
If you are a developer or participant of a Chinese open source font project, or you have any constructive opinions on this project, or you find errors in the collection, or you find Chinese open source fonts, you can submit issues or Pull requests, you can also comment below the website, or join the Telegram group to participate in the discussion.
- Font series: refers to a font project combination that usually contains multiple fonts or font families with different styles, font weights, and languages.
- Developers: including individual developers, communities, teams, commercial companies, etc.
- Font: refers to a single font. Here, fonts published separately by font weights, languages, etc. are merged, but for the convenience of reference and use, different styles of classification are retained.
- Style: Here are four common printing styles: bold, Song, regular, and imitation Song, as well as round styles from Japan, and others are classified as art. This style classification method only applies to this item, and there is currently no public and clear Chinese font style classification. Note that some fonts do not correspond to Chinese.
- Word weight: The thickness is an important attribute of the font. Word weight reflects how large the font developer prints the user based on, that is, the possibility of utilization. Multi-digital fonts only support Regular or Medium, or because the concept of Western font family is not deeply rooted in people's hearts, but with the simplification of the development process of font software and the continuous improvement of OpenType support, I believe that the future will be improved.
- License Agreement: One of the important differences between "open source" and "free" is the authorization agreement. Although the open source agreement does not have extremely strong legal effect, it protects the rights and interests of open source project defenders and is also beneficial to the transmission of the spirit of open source.
- Simple/Traditional/Japanese/Korean: It can basically meet the printing needs of texts in this language. Although this collection is Chinese font, it often involves the processing of languages and characters in different regions in daily environments. Therefore, the collection of open source fonts that only support Japanese is included because font printing and design in environments such as graphic design also has the possibility of using Japanese font shapes. In addition, in the East Asian cultural circle, there is also a need to process ideograms unique to Japanese and Korean. It should be noted that the font here supports the general required characters in this language. Individual fonts may support special characters, and the glyph design may not adopt regional standards. Please read the expressions of each font project to follow the concept and then use them as appropriate.
