Plangothic Project
Overview
The Broadbold project is a project based on Siyuan Broadbirth and supplementing the unified ideogram extension area of China, Japan and South Korea based on the Chinese mainland font shape as the standard. It is a sub-project of the "Broadbold Family", which was launched around June 2020.
Inclusion range
This font mainly supports all Chinese characters from the extension B to the extension J, and other blocks have sporadic characters.
Warning
The font is currently in an unfinished stage and is still missing a large number of Chinese characters.

This font is published in the form of SIL Open Font License (SIL Open Font Agreement) authorization, please refer to the authorization document for details.

You can:
- Any individual, group, organization or enterprise can use it for free for commercial and non-commercial purposes without paying fees, informing the author in advance, indicating the source information or obtaining the author's permission.
- The font files are secondaryly published or installed, embedded in any software or device, and the software or device can be redistributed or sold.
- The font files are modified, expanded and converted in format, but secondary modification works are strictly prohibited from using the retained names of this font "Plangothic" and "black" and "black" and the secondary modification version must also be published in SIL Open Font License (if only the format conversion of the source font can be used, the reserved name can be continued).

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why are bold texts two font files?
- Because a font can accommodate a limited number of glyphs (65535), the total number of ideograms is much larger than this value.
2. What is the difference between fallback and allideo in P1 name?
- The fallback file is suitable for users who have installed fonts that can display all Chinese characters. The part of Chinese characters that have not yet been made in bold will be empty and will not be written. The allideo file is suitable for users whose fonts are currently installed and cannot display all Chinese characters. The part of Chinese characters that have not yet been made in bold will be supplemented by Hanazono Mincho. Both font files can understand the current progress of the production of bold fonts. When this project has completely covered all Chinese characters, the fallback file will disappear.
3. Why are there only P1 font files in two categories?
- Because the ideograms of the extended G area, the extended H area and the extended J area covered by P2 have all been produced, there is no need to divide them again.
4. Why does this project contain a small number of Chinese characters that extend to Area A?
- Because the purpose of this project is "a supplement based on Siyuan bold", if you need to display the ideograms of the basic area and the extended area A, you can just use Siyuan bold. The ideograms of sporadic basic area and extended area A included in this project are ideograms with glyph changes in Unicode or do not meet the purpose of this project . Before adding these ideograms in this project, all have been compared with other mainstream fonts and in the Unicode code table glyphs.
5. Will there be versions containing other word weights (or other regional glyphs) in the future?
- Because the project volume is too large, there is no such plan. If you have similar ideas, you can create a derivative font version of the project you need.
6. Why does the fonts in this project have no complex text layout (ℂoplex ?ext ?ayout, CTL) or different font selector (?deographs ?ariation ?electors, IVS) functions?
- Because the font usage nature of this project focuses on tool fonts, that is, it is not responsible for the layout and only responsible for display (similar to Noto Unicode developed by Unifont and Mianyun Yili), the function of using complex text types to accurately type these languages, or using a different font selector to display glyphs in other regions is not covered by this project. If you have similar ideas, you can create derivative fonts that meet your needs.
7. Can the TTC fonts of this project (i.e., the merger of multiple TrueType fonts) be used directly on mobile phones or in software? That is, can it be installed directly on the phone and displayed all glyphs? Do the problems encountered apply to all software platforms, or are they limited to specific platforms?
- The TTC fonts of this project are suitable for Windows platforms and can be used normally. For other reasons, only one of the glyphs (usually P1) can be displayed for mobile phone devices directly installing TTC font files, and all glyphs cannot be displayed at the same time. When used in software, special settings may be required to display all glyphs in TTC fonts. Compatibility for TTC fonts may vary between platforms, but most cases require additional steps.
Attachment: How to install bold to Windows platform and global Fallback:
- Download the TTF version font file (optional one of two separate ttf or single ttc files);
- Select the font file in Explorer, then right-click → "Install for all users" (administrator permission is required, Win11 users also need to click "Show more options") to install the font file;
- Download the registry file
reg/Plangothic-Install.reg , double-click to run (administrator permission is required). If a security warning occurs, please click "Run"; - Log out and log in to your Windows system account again, and the settings will take effect;
- To delete fonts, you only need to delete the font body, and the registry settings need not be changed. If you want to delete the registry content, download the file
reg/Plangothic-Uninstall.reg and double-click to run.
Attachment: How to install bold text on your phone:
To install TTC fonts to your Android phone, follow these steps:
- Back up
/system/etc/fonts.xml and /system/etc/font_fallback.xml (if any) files of the current mobile phone system; - Open
