LXGW WenKai GB / Xiawu Wenkai GB

An open-source Simplified Chinese font derived from Klee One. An open-source Chinese font derived from Klee One.

Project Introduction

In December 2020, Japanese famous font manufacturer FONTWORKS released 7 open source Japanese fonts on GitHub, among which Klee One has the largest number of characters, with both imitation Song and Kai styles, with an elegant appearance and a gentle reading sense. Compared to the general textbook style, Klee One retains some of the characteristics of traditional printed fonts. In 2021, I added and modified the shape of the characters based on it to make the "Xiawu Wenkai"/LXGW WenKai font, which is widely popular. In addition, some font designers/lovers have also made other derivative versions, such as "Coriander"/Iansui, etc.

Although "Xiawu Wenkai" has modified the Chinese character shapes within the scope of GB/T 2312-1980 and "General Standard Chinese Character Table" to make it close to the new character shapes promoted by mainland China, it still retains the characteristics of Klee One printing style, such as "亚" and "官" and the broken strokes at the corners of strokes such as "亚" and "亚" and so on. Therefore, some people believe that the shape of "Xiawu Wenkai" is not standardized, not "G source character shape", and does not conform to the writing habits of general regular script. In view of this, based on "Xiawu Wenkai", I have made further modifications to the shape and stroke shape in accordance with the Chinese mainland's font standards (G source characters). I will continue to use the name "Xiawu Wenkai" and add a suffix of "GB" to indicate that the shape follows the national standard. Since the Regular weight of the Klee font is too thin, the original font SemiBold weight is selected as the Regular weight of the font.

Currently, this font contains 8105 Chinese characters included in the "General Standard Chinese Character Table" (2013), 7000 Chinese characters included in the "General Character Table of Modern Chinese" (1988), and 6763 Chinese characters included in GB/T 2312-1980, and some more commonly used Chinese characters are supplemented as needed (see "Preliminary Compilation List of Foreign Characters" for details), which basically meets the needs of modern Chinese (simplified Chinese characters) and is suitable for educational purposes (such as compulsory education books, children's books, copybooks, etc.). Starting from v1.0, traditional Chinese characters and IICore Chinese characters will be added in accordance with the "Preliminary Collection of Traditional Chinese Characters and Other Foreign Characters". Starting from v1.320 version, complete CJK unified Chinese character basic area and extended area A are complete, which meets the word collection range of GB 18030-2022 realization level 2.

Download the ttf format font file in the Releases interface.

ⅱ. Generate from source code

Please run ./sources/build.bat or ./sources/build.sh . fontmake needs to be installed: pip3 install fontmake and fontTools : pip3 install fonttools .

Things to note

The adjustment of this font refers to the "General Standard Chinese Character Table", GF 0023-2020 "General Standard Chinese Character Stroke Order Specification", as well as other regular and imitation Song characters that follow the national standards (such as "Textbook Standards"), to eliminate the characteristics of traditional printing fonts such as Klee One "straight dots" and "broken pen" as much as possible, and conform to the writing habits of regular style. However, due to personal aesthetics, human resources and other factors, very few details of the shape of the regular script are considered to be style-free. For example, because the characters "囗" and other parts involve a large number of characters, the original Klee style is retained and no changes are made; in addition, due to the original style of the Klee font, the original style is limited to the original style of the Klee font, and there is no distinction between "hanging needle vertical" and "hanging dew vertical". If there are any omissions in word modification in glyph standards, please submit it in Issue #1 and do not issue another issue.
The lowercase letter l is adjusted to the straight stick writing method of the original Klee One to conform to the Chinese pinyin writing habits; the uppercase letter I is adjusted to the writing method with horizontal bars at both ends to distinguish it from the lowercase letter l.
"Xiawu Wenkai GB Lightweight Edition" is also provided, which eliminates some less commonly used characters compared to the full version, which is convenient for APP to embed.

Assist in perfection

When making derivative fonts, the font name cannot be used with the "reserved name" of the original font. This font retains the name "Xiawu" and "LXGW". Based on the font secondary derived from this font, the words "Xiawu" or "LXGW" cannot appear in the name; and without modifying the font source code, the recompiled fonts can continue to use the retained name "Xiawu" and "LXGW" of this font.
According to Article 1 of the "Limitations and Conditions" of SIL Open Font License 1.1, the separate sale of font files (OTF/TTF files) is prohibited.
This font cannot be issued under license other than SIL Open Font License 1.1.
